Recovering Your Value and Identity in Christ After Betrayal
Let’s be honest: betrayal has a way of making you feel like you’ve been run over by an 18-wheeler…twice. First comes the shock. It’s like you’re standing in the middle of your own life, wondering, Who am I and how did I get here? Then comes the tape that plays on repeat: I’m not enough. I’m too much. I should have seen this coming. What’s wrong with me?
If you’ve been there (or are there now), I want you to know this: Betrayal does not get to define you.
I like to think of betrayal as that junk drawer in your kitchen. You know the one—full of random rubber bands, expired coupons, and at least three mystery keys. When your world implodes, that drawer gets yanked open, and everything comes spilling out.
Suddenly, you’re sorting through old insecurities, forgotten fears, and all the stories you’ve believed about your worth. And it’s messy. So, so messy.
But here’s the good news: God isn’t afraid of your junk drawer. He already knows exactly what’s in there, and He’s not holding it against you. In fact, He wants to clear out the clutter so you can see the truth about who you really are.
The enemy loves to use betrayal to convince you you’re worthless. But here’s what Scripture says instead:
“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.” —Isaiah 49:16
You are not forgotten.
You are not disposable.
You are not defined by someone else’s choices.
And just in case you need a little more backup:
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” —Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
Masterpiece.
That’s you.
Even with mascara-stained cheeks and a heart that feels like it’s in a million pieces.
Here’s one simple thing you can do today:
Grab a stack of sticky notes.
Write down three truths from Scripture about your identity.
“I am loved.” (Romans 8:38-39)
“I am chosen.” (1 Peter 2:9)
“I am a new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Stick them on your bathroom mirror, your fridge, or even your car dashboard.
Every time you see them, say them out loud.
Yes, it may feel cheesy at first. But you know what’s cheesier? Believing the lie that you’re not enough.
And if you need a smile, just remember: You are not a clearance item at the spiritual dollar store. You are God’s priceless, hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind treasure.
Friend, recovering your value and identity after betrayal isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a daily process of choosing truth over lies. It’s letting God remind you that your worth was settled long before anyone failed you.
You are loved.
You are seen.
You are His.
And nothing—absolutely nothing—can change that.
